KNOW THE METALS

Metal Definitions:

There are many different types of metals used to create jewelry pieces. The following is a description of the terms commonly used and how to care for your jewelry items.

10,14, 24 kt. Gold: 24 karat gold is "pure" or "solid" gold. When referring to 10 or 14 karat gold, the term "gold" is appropriately used.

Gold Filled (G.F.): this type of metal refers to the process of bonding a layer of 14kt. gold over brass through heat and pressure. The gold must be equal to 3% in order to be termed gold filled. This is a great way to have the "look" of gold without the high price tag. Likely, this metal will not tarnish over time, flake off, rub off, or cause skin to change colors.

Gold Plated (G.P.): this type of metal has almost no actual gold content in it. This metal will, most likely, tarnish over time.

Vermeil: this metal is actually gold plated silver. It was a process designed by the French and is similar to gold plating in that it will wear off over time and need re-plating.

Sterling SIlver: this precious metal is composed of pure silver and is often referred to as fine silver. The term "sterling" means that the silver is made up of 92.5% pure silver and the rest another alloy, such as copper. Silver must be cared for or it will tarnish over time. Also, a protective coating may be added to help prevent tarnishing.

Silver Plated: refers to a metal that contains less pure silver and has a thin layer of silver bonded to a base metal through electroplating.
